The Independent Chief Inspector was recently invited to visit the Portsmouth Ferry Terminal by port manager Phil Gadd. While on site, John Vine had a look at plans for a new terminal and was able to see firsthand a UK Border Agency operation to search cars and lorries coming into port on a ferry from Northern France.
During the visit John also had the opportunity to have a look at the on-site detention facility and observed the interaction between UK Border Agency staff and travellers going through passport and documentation checks.
John Vine said:
‘This was a very useful fact finding trip which allowed me a further opportunity to meet UKBA frontline staff and observe them carrying out their duties. It was good to see for myself how staff approach the operation of searching vehicles and freight for contraband and people attempting to enter the UK illegally.’
