By conducting a range of inspections throughout the year, the Independent Chief Inspector aims to:

  • drive improvement within the UK’s border and immigration functions, and
  • achieve broad coverage of the UK’s border and immigration operations both geographically and thematically.

Inspections are carried out using a set of criteria structured into four broad strands:

  • Outcomes;
  • Processes;
  • Impact; and
  • Leadership and Management.

The criteria are tailored to each individual inspection and made available to the Home Office in advance of the start of an inspection.
